Towards the end of my first year of University, I came across an old piece of carpet, I wanted to use in my work. Initially I wanted to maintain the fluidity of the material, whilst changing its structure and appearance by coating it in something like concrete.
However, roofing grout proved a better alternative. Not only did this substance not set as slowly but it was able to be manoeuvred and styled much more easily. The array of smaller sculptures are evidence of my manipulation of the grout with different materials amounting to this conclusion
Primarily I was intrigued by the contrast, a grey matted substance resting against a pure white plinth. In hindsight the work is a visual representation of the mental state that I was experiencing at the time.
